📘 A framework + worked example — not your personal record

This page is a decision tool for an Australian Year 12 / recent school-leaver who hasn't chosen a field yet. It reads nothing about you — the numbers below are national medians and official figures, and the "where am I" locator is a framework you fill in, never anyone's real data.

🔒 Privacy: no tracking, no profiling, no account, no quiz that secretly grades you. We only ever store the choices you tick, on your device. Privacy notice

The honest promise: you leave with a 3-field shortlist + a dated apply plan — not a brochure feeling, and not a fake "your perfect job is X" verdict. A quiz suggests; it doesn't decide.

The whole post-school landscape, on one line

Five real routes — none is the "lesser" path. Apprenticeships pay you while you train; a TAFE diploma can be a no-ATAR backdoor into a degree.

UniversityVET / TAFEApprentice /traineeshipWork + studyGap year AQF 7+ · ~3 yrsAQF 1–6 · wks–2 yrsAQF 3–4 · earn $$part-time bothdefer & bank ATAR
⚠️ Every $ amount, ATAR and date below is annual and state-specific — 2026 figures shown, each links to its live primary source. Confirm your year and your state before you act. Growth %s are projections, not promises.

Where am I right now? — a 0 → 100% self-locator

A framework, not a score. Find your rung, then jump to the tab that moves you up one. You're aiming for "ready to apply".

Your six questions, answered

  • Do I have to know my career now? No. Aim for a 3-field shortlist this year, not a 40-year decision. Choose a field →
  • Is uni the only "real" path? No — VET, apprenticeships and work+study are full routes; some pay you to train. Compare the 5 →
  • How do I actually pick a field? Where interests × skills × demand overlap — using the 3 free government quizzes.
  • Is ATAR the only way in? No — early entry (SRS), portfolio, EAS, and VET→uni all bypass or adjust it. Entry routes →
  • What does it cost? Uni: no upfront cost (HECS-HELP loan); TAFE often fee-free; apprentices earn a wage. Money & time →
  • Where do I research & apply? The official tools + a dated checklist for the year. Research & apply →

The shortlist rule

The win condition isn't certainty — it's a defensible shortlist you can act on.

1
Run one free quiz (10–20 min) → a list of suggested occupations to react to.
2
Cross-check demand on Jobs and Skills Australia — is it growing? what does it pay?
3
Find the lightest entry route that unlocks it (ATAR isn't always needed).
4
Note your state's admission-centre dates and apply. Done = applied, not "felt sure".

🧰 Helpful for your path From Mindspan · our own resources, not ads

Shown because they're relevant to researching a path — not to sell a 17-year-old a clinical course. General study skills first; the psychology branch only matters if your shortlist leans that way.

No pressure, AHPRA-conservative: nothing here is required for any school-leaver step. The strongest "next step" is just the other free pages, not a purchase.

Choose a field — the decision frameworks, made concrete

Don't chase a job title that sounds nice. Pick where three things overlap. This is a framework, wired to the free government quizzes that actually run a version of it.

Interests what you'd do anyway Skills what you're good at Demand what's hiring aim here
Honest note: don't over-optimise on interest alone, and don't chase demand into something you'd hate. The sweet spot is the overlap — and your ATAR is a rank, not a destiny.

The 3 free official quizzes — what each one actually does

All free, all government, no sign-up wall to explore. A quiz is a starting point you react to, not a verdict.

Your five options, side by side

The same five routes from the Overview — now with real money, time and "how you get in". "Earn while you learn": apprentices & trainees are paid a wage + super while training and finish with a nationally recognised qualification. Not the lesser path.

The AQF ladder — the shared yardstick (1 → 10)

So a Cert III and a Bachelor are comparable, not ranked good/bad. AQF levels are hard data. A higher number = more complexity/autonomy, not more "worth".

💡 "Earn while you learn" — the apprenticeship reality

  • Apprentices & trainees are paid a wage + super under an award/agreement/national minimum wage while training.
  • Australian Apprenticeship Support Loans — up to $25,983, income-contingent, paid monthly in arrears. 95%
  • Employer / priority-hiring incentives run via the Australian Apprenticeships Incentive System — specifics changed from 1 Jan 2026, so check the live notice rather than a fixed figure.

Every way IN — not just ATAR

ATAR is one door. There are at least six. Many open before ATAR is even released.

First, the myth-buster
ATAR is a RANK
0.00–99.95 — your position vs your age cohort, not a mark. Calculated & released by your state TAC. 96%
The one that confuses everyone
Selection rank ≠ ATAR
Selection rank = ATAR after adjustment factors (subject / equity / regional bonuses). Course profiles publish highest / median / lowest offers — research them. 90%

The six entry routes

RouteWhat it isWhy it matters
ATAR / selection rankThe standard rank-based offer, adjusted by bonuses.Research the course's published median offer — don't guess.
Principal-recommendation / SRS earlySchools Recommendation Scheme (UAC): free, ~1 min, auto-linked to your preferences.Offers can come before ATAR — earliest ~Nov. VTAC/QTAC run equivalents.
Portfolio / ATAR-free early entryOffers on Yr 11–12 results or a portfolio (e.g. creative-arts schemes, "no-ATAR" direct pathways).A whole category of offers that don't need an ATAR — check each uni + your TAC.
EAS (Educational Access Scheme)Adjustment for financial hardship / illness / family disruption / regional. If it applies to you, apply and claim everything — it can lift your selection rank.
VET → uni backdoor no ATARA Diploma can credit into a Bachelor and bypass ATAR entirely.A legitimate, common non-ATAR route — start in TAFE, finish at uni.
Apply direct to uniSome unis take direct applications outside the TAC for certain courses/pathways.Widens your options beyond the centralised offer round.
⚠️ Early-entry / SRS / portfolio schemes & their dates differ per university and per TAC. Treat these as a category to explore with your own TAC + each uni — not a single national deadline.

Your dated application checklist for the year

Order = order to do it. Dates differ by state & uni — note your TAC's dates at step 5.

1
Run one free quiz (myfuture or Your Career) → save / export the suggested occupations. 10–20 min
2
Make a 3-field shortlist from what the quiz + Bullseyes surfaced — fields, not single job titles.
3
Research each occupation on JSA profiles + myfuture: growth, pay, entry requirements. Cut anything that's a dead end for you.
4
Pick the lightest entry route per field (ATAR? SRS/early entry? portfolio? VET→uni?). Find courses on Course Seeker.
5
Note your TAC's key dates (preferences, early-offer, change-of-preference, main offer round) and any EAS/portfolio deadlines.
6
Apply through your admission centre (and direct-to-uni where needed). You're at 100% when you've applied.
To make every figure here authoritative, confirm 3 things: (1) your state TAC's current dates & schemes; (2) the exact course fee / CSP band on the provider + Study Assist; (3) the live occupation profile on JSA for pay & growth in your year. Projections and outcome %s change each release.
